Starbases

Watchtower-class starbase (TOS-53)
Watchtower-class starbase (TOS-53)

The Federation asserted its sovereignty in space space through a series of starbases, which could be located on a planet’s surface or on a space station, or a combination of both. This network of starbases provided a wide range of services; starbases could act as supply posts, recreation facilities, scientific outposts, trade hubs, and administrative centers. While all starbases provided each of these services, many were noted for their superiority in one or two specific areas.[1]

Construction began on the Constitution-class Starship Defiant at Tranquility Base, Luna,[7] in the 2250s. During the early years of her service, the Defiant conducted many missions of importance for Starfleet, and constantly patrolled the Klingon Neutral Zone as tensions between the two powers continued to rise. During that time, the Defiant became the sixth Federation starship to encounter the N’shaii, and was easily able to dispatch them.[3]

Daedalus class (Legacy)

The Daedalus class came into service in the 22nd century.[3] They were one of the first types of starships commissioned and operated under the auspices of the United Federation of Planets and were also among the first to demonstrate the primary/secondary hull design that would become characteristic of Starfleet vessels.[6] Unlike most starships, the Daedalus had a spherical main hull.[4] The last ships of this class were taken out of service by the year 2196.[3]

The Constitution class cruisers are among the most renowned vessels of their time. Serving as both a research vessel and a cruiser, these ships performed their duties to perfection for the majority of the 23rd century. The Constitution class ships were an integral part of the buildup during “The Great Awakening,” from the outset the most versatile of all ships built for the expansion efforts. class starships included the acclaimed U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701.[1] During the time of Captain James T. Kirk’s celebrated first five-year mission of exploration, only twelve of these ships were in existence.[2] Constitution class starships used duotronic computers, based on designs developed by Dr. Richard Daystrom in 2243.[8]

Venus, a Class-N world,[3] was the second planet in the Sol System.[1] Venus was 12,104 kilometers in diameter and had a gravity of 0.9 g, with a rotation of 243 Earth days and a surface temperature of 465°C. Venus was located 108 million kilometers from Sol, and took 224.7 days to complete one revolution around the star. Venus had no moons,[3] but was home to the Aphrodite Terraforming Station.[2] The Talosians viewed an image of the Sol System while accessing the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701‘s computer.[1]

Star system located in Sector 001, in the Alpha Quadrant. The parent star, Sol, was Type-G and was orbited by eight planets (though Pluto frequently switched between being considered a planet and a planetoid),[2] including Earth, and was commonly known as the Sun. The Talosians viewed an image of the Sol System and many images of Earth’s history while accessing the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701‘s computer in 2254.[1]

Located in California on Earth. Many key Starfleet facilities were located within the city, including Starfleet Academy[3] and Starfleet Command,[2], as well as the offices of the San Francisco Fleet Yards.[1] Jonathan Archer was raised in San Francisco.[6]

Lieutenant Commander Data was transported from Devidia II in 2368 to San Francisco in 1893 while pursuing a group of Devidians who were traveling through time.[4] Cholera had broken out in the city at this time, and the Devidians were using it as to cover up the fact that they were harvesting Human neural energy as a food source. Guinan and Samuel “Mark Twain” Clemens lived in San Francisco in 1893, and they encountered Data and Jean-Luc Picard, who had followed Data back in time.[5]
