Personal communications device.[1] A handheld version with a flip-open antenna grid was in use as early as the mid-22nd century,[4] and similar designs remained in service until the late 23rd century.[2] By the 24th century, however, Starfleet communicator design was modified, integrating it into the uniform as the Starfleet arrowhead insignia.[3]
