Keiko O’Brien convinces Ben Sisko to let his son and his classmates take a field trip to the planet Cetus Beta in the Gamma Quadrant. Supposedly safe and having no animal life, the shuttle is attacked by the Cardassians, causing a crash landing on the surface. With damaged equipment, an injured pilot, and the appearance of a unique life form, the young people are in way over their heads.
