Benjamin Sisko (DS9-541)

Benjamin Lafayette Sisko was born in Louisiana on Earth; he was the only son of Joseph Sisko,[2] a gourmet chef[1] who owned and operated a Creole restaurant in New Orleans.[2] Ben Sisko’s mother disappeared when he was a small child, leaving Joseph alone with Ben and his older sister, Sarah.[2] It wasn’t until many years later that Ben Sisko discovered that his mother had actually been possessed by one of the Bajoran Prophets in order to ensure his birth; once this had been accomplished, the Prophet left her body, and the woman fled from a life she had been forced to live.[3]

Shortly after graduating from Starfleet Academy, Sisko met a young woman named Jennifer at Gilgo Beach. They became romantically involved and soon married, eventually having a son, Jacob, together. Their happiness would only last a few years, however, as Jennifer was killed during the Battle of Wolf 359 while aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga NCC-31911, where Sisko was serving as first officer.[1]

Sisko, who now found himself a single parent much like his own father, accepted a position at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards. After two years, he was transferred to Bajor, where he would command a former Cardassian mining station, Terok Nor, which had been renamed Deep Space 9, and help the Bajorans rebuild their homeworld, which had recently regained its independence after decades of Cardassian occupation.[1]

Portrayed by Avery Brooks.
