K’t’inga class command pod (ST-01)
The K’t’inga class,[2] which meant “bringer of destruction,” was introduced in mid-2269 and was a match for the Federation Constitution class and Romulan S’ten Vastam (V-6) class cruisers. This gave the Klingon Defense Force a slight advantage along its borders, and the Klingon Empire began to press the balance more aggressively. Both the Romulan Navy and Starfleet commissioned upgraded versions of their vessels shortly after the appearance of the K’t’inga class in order to hold the Klingons in check. Within two years after its introduction, 75% of all facilities producing the D-7 had been converted to manufacture the K’t’inga, allowing the Klingons to place more and more of these ships in sensitive areas.[3]

J Class
J class (ENT-46)
J class, separated (ENT-46)
The J class freighter was somewhat smaller than the Y class, but otherwise similar.[2] Unlike the Y class, however, J class freighters could readily separate from their cargo containers, making the vessel a much smaller, more maneuverable ship.[3] Such freighters were usually armed only with low-yield plasma cannons for meteor defense, but most crews upgraded as soon as they could. Enterprise NX-01 helmsman Travis Mayweather, who grew up on the J class freighter E.C.S. Horizon, acknowledged that “running freight is dangerous … you’re a dozen light-years from home with 20 kilotons of dilithium ore in your hold, armed with nothing but a popgun for shooting oncoming meteors. What would you do?”[2] In 2265, Harry Mudd’s J class ship was destroyed in an asteroid field, though he was rescued by the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701.[1]

DY-500 class
DY-500 class (TNG-144)
A sublight class ship from the 21st century, similar in design to the earlier DY-100 class[1] massing 3000 metric tons, which remained in use for nearly a century after being modified for early versions of warp drive. The S.S. Mariposa NAR-7678 was of the DY-500 class, and was launched in 2123.[2]

DY-100 class liftoff (ENT-50)
A late 20th century interplanetary vessel design built on Earth using nuclear-powered engines and equipped with suspended-animation chambers for longer voyages during the pre-warp era, superceded in 2018 by designs with better sublight technology. The Botany Bay, launched in 1996, was a DY-100 class ship.[1] In 1996, Rain Robinson had a photograph of a DY-100 class ship lifting off on display in her office;[2] this same image was on display in the 602 Club in San Francisco in the mid-22nd century.[3]

Dierdre
The freighter Dierdre supposedly sent a distress call to the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 on Stardate 3497.2. The signal was a hoax sent by a Klingon vessel, and was the second Klingon attempt to prevent the Enterprise from returning to the planet Capella IV. Upon receipt of the fraudulent message, Chief Engineer Scott, who was temporarily in command of the Enterprise at the time, succinctly commented, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.”[1]

D-7 class
D-7 class (DS9-503)
The D-7 was probably the most infamous cruiser ever to stalk the spacelanes. These ships were associated with death and destruction on a scale second to none. When first introduced in late 2244, these vessels captured the minds and spirits of the Klingon commanders so fully that for many years they were viewed by outsiders as the symbol of Klingon tyrrany. This design was developed from the earlier d’ama (D-4) class cruiser and incorporated all of its most popular features. The command pod mounted forward on the boom assembly and the wing-like main hull were altered slightly, but all of the basic concepts were retained.[4]
