U.S.S. Ferrel
Constellation class (TNG-110)
The U.S.S. Ferrel was a Constellation class Federation starship in service in the 24th century. By 2364, the Ferrel was commanded by Captain Phil Manin. While on a mission to make first contact with the Choraii, the Ferrel, operating with a skeleton crew of 46, was attacked by unknown aliens. Captain Manin sent out a distress signal, which was received by the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D. The Ferrel was heavily damaged and the crew rescued by the Enterprise. The vessel later went back to Xendi Starbase 10.[1]

Excelsior class
Excelsior class (ST-06)
Excelsior class refit (ST-07)
In October 2284, the U.S.S. Excelsior NX-2000, the first of a new class, was commissioned. This vessel was the newest in Starfleet, and it incorporated many experimental operating systems.[3] Originally designed as a test-bed for the experimental transwarp drive, the Excelsior was called “The Great Experiment” by many in influential circles.[1] These ships were the newest of any in Starfleet and incorporated experimental technology in most of the components required to operate a starship. With so many new systems aboard these vessels, the process of testing them was slow. Prior to being installed, each component was tested and retested until it met standards. Nevertheless, when the Excelsior was taken out for trials, the evaluation teams were constantly faced with primary system malfunctions that would not allow any of the secondary or backup systems to be tested. This caused the evaluators to deal with these new components on a one-at-a-time basis, and thus creating time delays in the commissioning of the class.[3]
The Excelsior class underwent a number of late design changes when the transwarp project ultimately failed. While transwarp was never realized, designers were unwilling to cast aside what was otherwise a sound cruiser design. The transwarp engines were removed in favor of conventional linear warp drive engines. The Excelsior class could cruise at Warp 8, sustain speeds of Warp 10 for several hours, and reach Warp 13 when necessary. This made it by far the fastest Starfleet vessel for almost five decades.[31]

U.S.S. Essex NCC-173
Daedalus class (Legacy)
The Daedalus class Starship Essex, commanded by Captain Bryce Shumar[1], fought in the Romulan War from 2155 through 2161.[2] In 2167, the Essex, now a Federation starship under the sector command of Admiral Uttan Narsu of Starbase 12, was reported lost. The Essex was caught in an electromagnetic storm in the atmosphere of a Class-M moon of planet Mab-Bu IV. The storm had been caused by noncorporeal criminal life forms from the Ux-Mal system who had hoped to escape aboard the Essex. The ship was destroyed and all 229 crew members killed. In 2368, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D encountered beings who claimed to be members of the Essex crew, marooned and rendered noncorporeal since 2167. These beings were, in fact, the Ux-Mal criminals, who sought to escape by commandeering the Enterprise.[1]

U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E
U.S.S. Enterprise (ST-08)
The Sovereign class Starship Enterprise was one of the most advanced ships in Starfleet. It was constructed at the San Francisco Fleet Yards and commissioned on Stardate 49827.5, under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. It was 685 meters long, making it the longest vessel ever to bear the famous name. The Enterprise had substantially the same bridge crew as its immediate predecessor,[2] although Commander Worf had accepted a transfer to Deep Space 9.[1]

U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D
U.S.S. Enterprise-D (TNG-101-102)
Enterprise saucer on Veridian III (ST-07)
A Galaxy-class extended-duration starship and the flagship of Starfleet, the Enterprise was commanded by Captain Jean-Luc Picard.[1] With a total of 42 decks, the Enterprise was twice the length and had eight times the interior space of the Constitution-class ships of the previous century, and carried a combined crew and passenger load of more than one thousand.[5]

U.S.S. Enterprise-B (ST-07)
U.S.S. Enterprise-B (ST-07)
The Excelsior-class U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-B was launched from Earth orbit in late October 2292, with Captain John Harriman commanding.[3] There was some opposition to the new Enterprise being an Excelsior class ship. If Starfleet wanted to retain the Enterprise name, they argued, it should go to one of the new Constellation class cruisers, with their distinctive quadruple nacelle design. In the end, the Excelsior class kept the Enterprise name because this class was becoming the new workhorse of Starfleet, much like the Constitution class of a few decades earlier, and Starfleet believed that the Enterprise name should be given to a ship class that would have high visibility.[1]

Space Shuttle Enterprise OV-101
Space Shuttle (NASA)
Early Earth orbital test vehicle, the prototype for the planet’s first reusable spacecraft, the Space Shuttle Enterprise was named in honor of several historic naval vessels, and was designated OV-101.[5] An image of this ship, the first spacecraft to bear the name Enterprise, was displayed in Captain Archer‘s ready room aboard the Enterprise NX-01,[4] on the rec deck of the refitted U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701,[1] and in the observation lounges of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D[2] and the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E.[3] The ship remained in the Smithsonian Institution until 2271, when it was refitted with a modern drive system and made spaceworthy to celebrate the anniversary of the Apollo 11 Lunar landing.[5]

U.S.S. Endeavour (TNG-201)
The Nebula class Starship Endeavour served as part of the tachyon detection grid during the Federation blockade against Romulan interference during the Klingon civil war.[1] The Endeavour was stationed in the Cleon Sector in 2368 when crew members from the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D were controlled by Ktarian operatives seeking to gain control of Starfleet. Commander William Riker was ordered to pilot a shuttle to the Endeavour to spread the takeover.[2] In 2373, the Endeavour was part of a Starfleet armada that intercepted a Borg cube at Earth.[3]

U.S.S. Defiant NX-74205
U.S.S. Defiant (DS9-537)
Defiant class (ST-08)
Lead vessel of the Defiant class; the Defiant was officially classified as an escort, but began development in 2366 as a small, highly-powered, heavily-armed starship intended to defend the Federation against the Borg. The Defiant was the first of what was to be a new Federation battle fleet. Starfleet abandoned the project when the Borg threat became less urgent and after design flaws turned up during the Defiant‘s shakedown cruise.[1]

Defiant class
Defiant class (DS9-537)
The Defiant class, first commissioned in 2370,[1] differed from most other Starfleet designs in many ways. It was primarily designed for military purposes, having been developed to fight the Borg, beginning in the months before the Battle of Wolf 359 in 2366. Following that incident, Lieutenant Commander Benjamin Sisko joined the development team at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards. Besides conventional weapons, the ship had pulse phaser cannons and quantum torpedo launchers. While other ships of the class were built, the U.S.S. Defiant NX-74205 was the only Starfleet vessel equipped with a cloaking device, due to a special amendment to the Treaty of Algeron, intended to allow the Defiant to covertly gather data on the Dominion, which would then be shared with the Romulan Star Empire.[1]
