Captain Sulu of the U.S.S. Excelsior and his crew are kidnapped. When Federation-conducted negotiations come to a standstill, Captain James Kirk and the former officers of the U.S.S. Enterprise reunite to rescue their old comrade.

The officers learn carrying out their mission could prove difficult when they encounter the kidnappers—a greedy, little-known race called the Thraxians, who believe their way is the only way. Now the Thraxians are demanding super-powerful weapons in exchange for the hostages.

With no other alternatives, Kirk is forced to consider giving in to the Thraxians to save the Excelsior crew—a decision that could save a few, but endanger the lives of an entire star system…

Excerpt

“Great. Another Klingon jail. Maybe this time they should just skip the trial,” Dr. McCoy said as he and James Kirk were hustled along, Klingon disruptors prodding them in the back. “I don’t think reasonable doubt is part of their judicial system anyway.”

“Bones,” Kirk whispered, “when we get to the next corner, I’m going to trip this guard next to me; we’ll head for the crowd on the street. Maybe they won’t attempt to fire with so many Prometheans around.”

“Relying on a Klingon’s humanity? Excellent plan,” McCoy groused.

A few feet farther, the Klingon leader stepped off the sidewalk. A few moments later, Kirk and McCoy reached the same spot. As Kirk began to step down, he shot his foot out in front of the guard next to him. With the help of a strong push in the back, the big Klingon stumbled off the sidewalk.”

At once, Kirk and McCoy turned the corner at a run and sprinted several yards ahead and into the crowd.

“Scotty!” Kirk shouted into his communicator. “Where the hell are you?”
