While on a fact-finding mission within the Triangle, the Chandley class Monson was overtaken by four Klingon K-23 class destroyers. Eventually, two closed on the Monson and declared she had entered Klingon space, demanding she heave to and prepare to be boarded. The Monson‘s captain immediately raised shields and warned the Klingons off. The Klingons attacked, and the Monson returned fire. The Monson‘s aft torpedoes hit the lead Klingon ship’s bridge, causing it to veer off course and into the path of the other vessels, whose fire crippled the damaged ship. Seeing this as an ill omen, the remaining Klingon vessels departed the area, leaving the crippled ship behind. The Monson approached the Klingon ship, accepted its surrender, and beamed aboard two marine platoons before the ship exploded, killing all aboard.[1]

U.S.S. Hanson NCC-2309

Chandley class (FASA-2217)
Chandley class (FASA-2217)

The first combat experience of any Chandley class vessel was considered a total sucess. While patrolling in the Gorn Sector, the Starship Hanson received a distress call from a commercial freighter stating it was under attack by unknown vessels. Upon reaching the freighter’s coordinates, the Hanson encountered two Gorn cruisers engaged in a boarding action against a Liberty class freighter. When ordered to withdraw, the Gorn ships raised shields and opened fire. The Hanson made short work of the Gorn vessels, but the Marine boarding parties found their task difficult at best, encountering Gorn marines who refused to give ground easily.[1]

Chandley class
Chandley class (FASA-2217)

Chandley class. The Chandley was the only ship in Starfleet named after the company that designed and built it; the company was owned by the descendants of Rear Admiral Thomas Chandley, one of the most decorated heroes of Terran history. Chandley, and admiral in the United States Navy, was well known for his brilliant blockade of Russian ports during the Aleutian Incident of 2003.[1]

U.S.S. Blackheart NCC-2327

Chandley class
Chandley class (FASA-2217)

Chandley class. One of the most decorated frigates in Starfleet, the Blackheart was reported missing while patrolling the Rimward Sector. A search was made, but all that was found was a communications buoy from the Blackheart. The buoy had only a partial message: “…small object paralleling our course…no response on hailing freq…” The remainder of the message was garbled, and portions had been intentionally erased. Starfleet has no more information on the fate of the ship or its crew. The Blackheart was most remembered for the large black hearts painted on each of its lower wing assemblies; such decoration was typical among Chandley class ships, making them easily distinguishable on visual scan, and the practice was thought to keep the crew’s pride in their vessel at its peak.1

After the conclusion of the Four Years War, Starfleet Command initiated the Strategic Forces Survey; the results of the study have influenced plans ever since. One weakness identified was the need for combat vessels carrying boarding parties or prize crews to quickly deliver decisive blows against a retreating or routed enemy. To address this, Starfleet began to develop frigates designed to carry Marines trained to board hostile vessels and complexes. The most impressive of these frigates is the Chandley class.[1]

The first of a new generation of Warp 5 starships designed for long-term space travel and scientific discovery, the NX class Starship Enterprise was launched in April 2151 under the command of Captain Jonathan Archer. The Enterprise NX-01 was the culmination of more than three decades of research and development at the Warp Five Complex by Archer’s father, Dr. Henry Archer, and other scientists inspired by warp pioneer Zefram Cochrane. The Enterprise‘s Warp 5 engine put humanity within reach of thousands of inhabited worlds, compared to the small handful at lower warp speeds, for the first time.[1]
