Lead vessel of the Defiant class; the Defiant was officially classified as an escort, but began development in 2366 as a small, highly-powered, heavily-armed starship intended to defend the Federation against the Borg. The Defiant was the first of what was to be a new Federation battle fleet. Starfleet abandoned the project when the Borg threat became less urgent and after design flaws turned up during the Defiant‘s shakedown cruise.[1]

I.S.S. Defiant NCC-1764 (Mirror)

Constitution class (TOS-10)
Constitution class (TOS-10)

In the Mirror Universe, the Terran Imperial Starship Defiant was in service in the 23rd century. The Defiant was destroyed by a Tholian force led by Loskene in 2268, after Loskene had demanded the Defiant retreat. Its recorder beacon was recovered from the Defiant‘s wreckage by the I.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. Despite standard precedure to retaliate against any military that attacked a Terran vessel, the Empire did not respond to this particular attack, per the recommendation of Captain Spock to Emperor John Gill, in light of the Empire’s greater concern at the time with the growing Klingon-Cardassian Alliance.[1] It’s unclear if this Defiant is the prime reality starship, having remained in service for over a century after arriving back in time, or a newer Constitution-class vessel with the same name.

Construction began on the Constitution-class Starship Defiant at Tranquility Base, Luna,[7] in the 2250s. During the early years of her service, the Defiant conducted many missions of importance for Starfleet, and constantly patrolled the Klingon Neutral Zone as tensions between the two powers continued to rise. During that time, the Defiant became the sixth Federation starship to encounter the N’shaii, and was easily able to dispatch them.[3]

Defiant class (DS9-537)
Defiant class (DS9-537)

The Defiant class, first commissioned in 2370,[1] differed from most other Starfleet designs in many ways. It was primarily designed for military purposes, having been developed to fight the Borg, beginning in the months before the Battle of Wolf 359 in 2366. Following that incident, Lieutenant Commander Benjamin Sisko joined the development team at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards. Besides conventional weapons, the ship had pulse phaser cannons and quantum torpedo launchers. While other ships of the class were built, the U.S.S. Defiant NX-74205 was the only Starfleet vessel equipped with a cloaking device, due to a special amendment to the Treaty of Algeron, intended to allow the Defiant to covertly gather data on the Dominion, which would then be shared with the Romulan Star Empire.[1]

Daedalus class (Legacy)

The Daedalus class came into service in the 22nd century.[3] They were one of the first types of starships commissioned and operated under the auspices of the United Federation of Planets and were also among the first to demonstrate the primary/secondary hull design that would become characteristic of Starfleet vessels.[6] Unlike most starships, the Daedalus had a spherical main hull.[4] The last ships of this class were taken out of service by the year 2196.[3]

Centaur class (DS9-525)

The Centaur-class Starship Cortez, commanded by Captain Quentin Swofford, was part of a task force commanded by Captain Sisko to retake station Deep Space 9 during the Dominion War in 2374’s Operation Return. The Cortez had trouble with the guidance thrusters on the port nacelle. The ship was ordered to fall back, and its position in the fleet was filled by the U.S.S. Sarek.[1] The Cortez later was one of the first ships to break through the Dominion fleet, which it reported was in retreat; it was later ordered to rendezvous with the rest of the Federation fleet at Deep Space 9.[2] The Cortez was reported missing while patrolling the border, and was presumed to have been destroyed by the Jem’Hadar. The Defiant searched the area for survivors for nearly six hours.[3] Named for Hernan Cortez, the Spanish conquistador who overthrew the Aztec empire and won Mexico for Spain.
