“Ship’s company, attention!”

Instant silence reigned, broken only by the echo of a thousand heels clicking together. Riker slowly inspected the troops nearest to him and came to a stop half a dozen feet away from the line of officers.

He came to attention and offered an old-style salute. He hoped he had performed the ritual greeting correctly. It was over two hundred years old, and he had never actually seen one living soldier salute another.

“Commander William Riker, Federation ship Enterprise, sir.”

The man stepped forward, and Riker felt as if he actually recognized him. The family resemblance was strong.

“Captain Lysander Murat, Federation ship U.S.S. Verdun. Welcome aboard, sir.

At his words a loud cheer erupted. Riker listened as hundreds chanted “The Day of Deliverance!” He watched as soldier after soldier withdrew bayonet from belt and held it aloft. The sight was chilling . . .
