Deanna Troi escapes from her domineering mother and enrolls in Starfleet Academy. Misconceptions among her fellow cadets force her to strive harder to prove she isn’t cheating by just reading minds. When her mother shows up to teach one of her classes, Deanna almost quits. A “filtering” test requires her to work alongside others, eventually revealing her true destiny.
