Captain Mackenzie Calhoun scrambled for his sword, which lay just a few feet away. It skidded past where he lay and he thrust out a desperate hand and snagged it, just barely.

His enemy, Ryjaan, raised his dagger and leaped toward where Calhoun lay wounded, a shout of triumph already bursting from his lips . . .
