This is the story of Captain Kirk‘s final hours in command of the USS Enterprise, and how he, Mr. Spock, and Dr. McCoy struggle to establish new lives apart from each other and the starship. We see the newly-promoted Admiral Kirk, in charge of a specially-created Starfleet division, as he attempts to defuse a critical hostage situation; Mr. Spock, who, in the midst of a teaching assignment on Vulcan, finds the one thing he least expected; and Dr. McCoy, whose unerring instinct for trouble lands him smack in the middle of an incident that could trigger an insterstellar bloodbath…

Excerpt

“I have come to say good-bye,” Spock said.

McCoy felt a painful and — because it was Spock — embarrassing tightening of his throat.

“Look, Spock, I know I’ve teased you a lot over the years, but… Well, hell.” He thrust out his hand.

Spock took the proffered hand briefly, then let it go. His grip was strong, warm to the point of feeling feverish. “In spite of our philosophical disagreements, Doctor, I have a great deal of respect for you.”

That did it. McCoy felt himself choking up, and was angry at himself for doing so. He cleared his throat a few more times and hoped Spock wouldn’t notice the film of tears in his eyes.

“Good-bye, Spock,” he said quietly, and then, unable to contain his exasperation: “Dammit all to hell, I think that of everyone, I’m going to miss you most.”

Spock nodded ever so slightly in acknowledgement. “Live long and prosper, Doctor.” He turned and walked away down the corridor.

McCoy couldn’t really help it; he had the strangest feeling he would never see the Vulcan again.
