The Sovereign class Starship Enterprise was one of the most advanced ships in Starfleet. It was constructed at the San Francisco Fleet Yards and commissioned on Stardate 49827.5, under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. It was 685 meters long, making it the longest vessel ever to bear the famous name. The Enterprise had substantially the same bridge crew as its immediate predecessor,[2] although Commander Worf had accepted a transfer to Deep Space 9.[1]

The Enterprise had 24 decks, with all the facilities one would expect to find on a vessel designed for deep space exploration, including transporters, Stellar Cartography, hydroponics bays, and holodecks. Main Engineering, on Deck 16, extended through three decks with a vertical warp core. Thick cylinders on each side of the warp core contained plasma coolant. Although the Enterprise‘s mission was primarily one of peace and exploration, the ship was armed with the latest weaponry, including several phaser banks, and a complement of powerful quantum torpedoes.[2]

Sickbay shared a design substantially similar to that on Intrepid (II) class ships. The entire room was fitted with holographic emitters and had an independent computer system that could project the sophisticated Emergency Medical Hologram, a holographic doctor that was designed to supplement the ship’s medical personnel if they were killed, injured, or overwhelmed.[2]
