Reginald Barclay and creature in transporter (TNG-228)
Lieutenant Reginald Endicott Barclay III, a Human who was born in 2333, was unusually eccentric for a Starfleet officer. Though he was a talented systems diagnostic engineer, he was uncomfortable in the most common of social situations, and so took great pains to avoid them. Because of his social weaknesses, at one point in his career he was addicted to the holodeck. One of his favorite scenarios was a variation on “The Three Musketeers” in which the holodeck version of Counselor Deanna Troi fell in love with him.[1] Another of Barclay’s quirks was his morbid fear of the transporter. For the sake of his Starfleet career he tried to hide his unease, but when given the option he would prefer to travel by shuttlecraft for hours rather than beam somewhere in seconds.[3]

Barbo
Ferengi and cousin of Quark. Barbo was released from the Tarahong detention center in 2369. At a Ferengi trade conference held on Deep Space Nine, Grand Nagus Zek recounted how Quark and his cousin sold defective warp drives to the Tarahong government. Zek praised Quark for betraying Barbo to the authorities and leaving him at the Tarahong detention center while Quark kept all the profits, an honorable act in the Ferengi system of values.[1]

Barash
Barash (TNG-182)
Barash as ‘Jean-Luc Riker’ (TNG-182)
A humanoid child who was forced to leave his home planet when it was attacked in the late 2350s or early 2360s. Fearing for his safety, Barash’s mother hid him in a cavern on Alpha Onias III. The cavern was equipped for his survival and included specialized neural scanners that were able to transform matter into any form imagined, so that he could live his life in safety. In 2367, Barash used this equipment to lure Commander William T. Riker into a fantasy world, in which Barash hoped Riker would remain as a playmate. In this virtual reality, some sixteen years had passed, during which Riker had been promoted to captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D, Jean-Luc Picard had become an admiral, and there was some rapproachment with the Romulans. Also in this fantasy, Riker had married Minuet, and they had a ten-year-old son named Jean-Luc Riker. This “son” was actually Barash, who hoped Riker would play with him in this artificial environment. Riker eventually saw through the pretense, as well as a second simulation involving the Romulans, with Barash, still in Human guise and calling himself Ethan, and Barash revealed the true nature of the cavern and his true form as well. Unwilling to leave the child behind alone, Riker returned with him to the Enterprise.[1] Portrayed by Chris Demetral (Barash as Jean-Luc Riker/Ethan) and Dana Tjowander.

Baran, Arctus
Shrewd and ruthless captain of a mercenary vessel in 2370. Baran’s crew of about a dozen mercenaries raided archaeological artifacts from several star systems, searching for artifacts with a particular terikon decay profile. Baran controlled his crew with neural servo implants, which had been given to the crew by Baran’s predecessor.[1] In 2370, Baran was hired by agents of the Vulcan isolationist movement who sought to obtain fragments of the ancient Stone of Gol. Baran’s search attracted the attention of U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D Captain Jean-Luc Picard who, under the name Galen, infiltrated Baran’s crew along with Commander William T. Riker. Baran was killed before all the fragments could be assembled.[1] Portrayed by Richard Lynch.

Jhet’leya (VOY-238)
Ensign Lyndsay Ballard and Ensign Harry Kim were classmates from Starfleet Academy who were both assigned to the U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656 and were stranded with the ship in the Delta Quadrant in 2371. On Stardate 51563, Ballard and Kim went on a dilithium extraction mission together in the Vyntadi Expanse, where they detected dilithium on a Class-M planet. But when they landed their shuttle and began to explore, they discovered it was a trap set by a Hirogen hunting party, who reconfigured a power cell to give off false dilithium readings. As Kim and Ballard were headed back to the shuttle, they were 10 feet away when Ballard was hit with a neural disruptor. By the time Kim got her back to Voyager, she was dead. Kim gave the eulogy at her funeral, where he noted that she had a favorite saying taken from an old Klingon battle cry, “Own the day.” Ballard was buried in space with a torpedo casing as a sarcophagus.
