Pavel Andreievich Chekov, an only child, was born in 2245 in Pushkino, in the Russian Federation on Earth.[5] In 2262, at the age of 17, Chekov entered Starfleet Academy, one of his goals being the eventual command of a starship. While at the Academy, Chekov became involved with a young woman named Irina Galliulin, but the relationship did not last because Galliulin was uncomfortable with the structured way of life required by Starfleet.[6]

In 2266, he graduated from the Academy and was assigned as an engineer’s mate aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. During that year, he encountered Khan Noonien Singh, a product of a twentieth-century genetic engineering project. Khan, along with dozens of other genetic “supermen,” had conquered much of Earth during the Eugenics Wars in the 1990s. The group took control of the Enterprise, but were eventually left on planet Ceti Alpha V with Lieutenant Marla McGivers, who had become infatuated with Khan.[1, 8]

In 2267, Chekov was reassigned as navigator aboard the Enterprise, where he served on the bridge with Captain Kirk and Commander Spock, following his actions while Kirk, Spock and McCoy were missing on planet Pyris VII.[2] Chekov also served in various capacites over the next several years, acting in some ways as a protégé to Spock. Also in 2267, Chekov was the only member of an Enterprise landing party to Gamma Hydra IV who was not affected with an aging disease. During the mission, he became startled at the sight of a dead colonist; the surge of adrenaline protected him from radiation sickness that caused the aging process.[3]

In 2268, Chekov was part of a landing party that was “punished” for trespassing by the Melkotians by forcing them to reenact the shootout at the OK Corral in the roles of the Clantons. Chekov was apparently killed before the famous gunfight even took place, but the landing party was saved by Commander Spock, who realized that nothing there was real and convinced the others through a mind meld, allowing the bullets to pass right through them. When they returned to the Enterprise, they found that Chekov was alive and well.[4] Later that year, Chekov imagined he had a brother, Piotr, while under the influence of the Beta XII-A entity.[5] Chekov met irina Galliulin again that year, while she was seeking the mythical planet Eden with Dr. Sevrin.[6]

In 2272, two years after the end of the Enterprise‘s five-year mission under Kirk, now an admiral and Chief of Starfleet Operations, Chekov had been promoted to lieutenant and was assigned as chief of security aboard the newly-refitted Enterprise, under the command of Captain Will Decker. Kirk assumed command of the ship once more when a high-energy cloud of unknown origin threatened the Earth. The cloud was revealed to be surrounding the Voyager VI space probe, and it merged with Decker and Enterprise navigator Ilia before departing for another dimension.[7]

Chekov was promoted to lieutenant commander in 2277, following the end of Kirk’s second five-year mission. In 2282, Chekov was promoted to commander and assigned as first officer aboard the U.S.S. Reliant NCC-1864 under Captain Clark Terrell.[8]
